Reckless Driving and Car Accidents

Georgia law defines reckless driving as driving with a “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.” Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, ignoring traffic signs, weaving in and out of traffic, failure to yield, racing other vehicles, tailgating, and other dangerous driving behavior may be considered reckless driving.

In Georgia, reckless driving is considered to be a misdemeanor criminal offense punishable by up to 12 months in jail, or a fine of up to $1,000. The judge may impose other penalties, such as community service and/or completion of drug and alcohol programs.
